The Isthmus of Suez is a narrow piece of land between two big bodies of water: the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It is very important because it is the place where Africa and Asia meet.

This land is mostly flat and dry, with very hot weather and little rain. Long ago, clever people, like the ancient Egyptians, built canals here to help boats move more easily.

Today, the Suez Canal cuts through the Isthmus of Suez. This canal is a busy road for ships. It helps them travel between the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean without having to go all the way around Africa. This makes trips faster and saves fuel for many ships.
