Welcome to Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville is the biggest city in the state of Florida. It sits along the St. Johns River on the Atlantic coast in the northeastern part of the state. People often call it "Jax" for short. It is also one of the biggest cities in the United States.

A City with History

The area where Jacksonville is today has been home to people for thousands of years. It was originally home to the Timucua people. Later, Spanish, French, and British explorers came there. The city was named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States.

Today, Jacksonville is a busy city. It is important for military operations, with several major bases nearby. The city also has a busy deep-water port. People enjoy visiting for fun activities like golf, as the PGA Tour headquarters is located nearby.

Jacksonville has many parks and fun places to visit. The Timucuan Preserve is a large natural area with wetlands and waterways. It includes historic spots like the Fort Caroline National Memorial and the Kingsley Plantation. The city also has beautiful beaches nearby, like the Jacksonville Beaches.

Jacksonville loves sports! The city has a famous football team called the Jacksonville Jaguars. They play in a big stadium called TIAA Bank Field. There are also teams for baseball, hockey, and more. College sports are popular too, with big games like the Gator Bowl.

Jacksonville has many schools, including public schools run by the Duval County Public Schools. There are also colleges like the University of North Florida and Jacksonville University. The city has a big public library system with many books and computers.

Coming and Going

Getting around Jacksonville is easy! There are seven bridges over the St. Johns River, including the Napoleon Bonaparte Broward Bridge (Dames Point) and the Fuller Warren Bridge. The city has an airport, Jacksonville International Airport, and a train station for Amtrak trips. There is also a train called the Jacksonville Skyway that connects important places in the city.
