Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck was a very talented painter who lived a long time ago in the Netherlands. He worked in a beautiful city called Bruges. People remember him for his amazing paintings that show tiny details you can almost touch!
We do not know exactly when Jan van Eyck was born, but it was around the year 1380 or 1390 in a place called Maaseik. This place is now in Belgium. Jan van Eyck painted pictures for important rulers and even traveled far away to Lisbon for his work.
Only about 20 of his paintings are still with us today. These paintings show both stories from the Bible and pictures of real people. One of his most famous works is called The Arnolfini Portrait. He often signed his paintings with a special phrase that meant “As I can,” showing how proud he was of his art. His paintings helped change the way artists worked during the Early Northern Renaissance.
Jan van Eyck loved to paint very detailed pictures. He would put tiny symbols and ideas from the Bible into his paintings, making everyday scenes feel special and full of meaning. Many of his paintings show the Virgin Mary, and he was also famous for painting portraits of people. Because more people had money, portraits were no longer only for kings and nobles. Many of his famous portraits still exist today.
People think Jan van Eyck was one of the best painters of his time. A square named after him called Jan van Eyckplein is in Bruges today, reminding everyone of his wonderful art.
