Welcome to Jerash
Jerash is a beautiful city in Jordan. It is found in the north, about 30 miles from the capital city, Amman. People have lived here for a very long time, since around 7500 BC! Today, Jerash is famous for its old, well-preserved ruins. Some call it the "Pompeii of the Middle East" because of how well its ancient buildings have stayed standing.
A City With a Long History
Jerash has a rich history. Long ago, it was known as Gerasa and was an important city during the Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine times. It was one of the cities in a group called the Decapolis. Many early Christian churches were built here, sometimes using old temple stones.
Visiting Jerash Today
Today, Jerash is a popular place for tourists. In 2018, about 330,000 visitors came to see its amazing ruins. The city holds a big cultural event called the Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts each summer. This festival has dance, music, and theater performances, and it happens in the old Roman ruins. People also enjoy watching a special show called the Roman Army and Chariot Experience, where they see people dressed as Roman soldiers and watch chariot races.
Jerash is a wonderful place to learn about the past and enjoy fun activities!
