Who Was Johann Benedict Listing?

Johann Benedict Listing was a clever man who loved numbers and shapes. He was born in Frankfurt in 1808 and passed away in Göttingen in 1882. He studied at the University of Göttingen and learned about many interesting things like terrestrial magnetism and optics.

Shapes That Can Stretch and Twist

Listing is famous for his work in a special kind of math called topology. Topology is about how shapes can be stretched and twisted without tearing. Imagine playing with clay—you can make many different shapes, but it is still the same piece of clay! Listing helped start this important area of math.

Why Do We Remember Him?

Listing’s ideas are still used today in science and technology. He even helped make the word “topology” famous. He also studied how our eyes see the world and made up the word “geoid” to describe the shape of the Earth. People all over the world still learn from his work.
