The Korean War

The Korean War was a difficult time when two parts of Korea did not agree. North Korea and South Korea are two separate countries on the Korean Peninsula. After World War II ended in 1945, Korea was split into two parts along the 38th parallel. This split made many problems between the two sides.

In 1950, North Korea tried to bring both parts together by force. The United Nations, led by the United States, helped South Korea to defend itself. Many countries sent soldiers to support South Korea. China and the Soviet Union helped North Korea during this time.

The war lasted until 1953. It ended with an agreement to stop fighting, but no official peace treaty was signed. Because of this, North and South Korea are still separate today. A special area called the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was created to keep the peace between the two countries.

Even though the Korean War was a sad and difficult time, it helped shape the world we live in today. South Korea grew to become a strong and modern country with help from its friends. North Korea remains separate and is still watched closely by the world to help keep peace.
