Krems an der Donau
Krems an der Donau is a lovely city in Lower Austria, Austria. It is the 20th-largest city in the country and sits close to Vienna, about 70 kilometres west. The city is special because it has its own statute, meaning it is both a town and a district.
Where It Is
Krems is found where the Krems and Danube Rivers meet, at the end of the beautiful Wachau valley. It is in the south of Waldviertel, a green and peaceful area. The city is next to many places, like Langenlois, Dürnstein, and Mautern an der Donau.
A Very Old Place
People have lived in Krems for a very long time. Scientists found a grave there that is over 27,000 years old, making it one of the oldest graves ever found in Austria! The city was first written about in the year 995 by Otto III.
Fun Things to See
Krems has many interesting spots to visit. One is the Steiner Tor, a special gate built in 1480. You can also see old houses, churches, and art galleries. The city makes a special kind of drink called Marillenschnaps, which is an apricot brandy.
Getting Around
Krems has a big train station where many trains stop. You can ride trains to Vienna, St. Pölten, and other places. There are also buses that help people move around the city and nearby areas. In the summer, a special tourist train takes visitors to see the old parts of Krems.
