Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes in North America. It is the smallest of the Great Lakes but still very big! It sits between Canada and the United States.
The lake touches the Canadian province of Ontario on the north, west, and southwest. On the south and east, it touches the U.S. state of New York. The border between Canada and the United States runs right through the middle of the lake.
Many people live near Lake Ontario. On the Canadian side, big cities include Toronto, Hamilton, and Kingston. On the U.S. side, the main city is Rochester.
Lake Ontario is the last lake in the Great Lakes chain. It flows out to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. The lake gets most of its water from the Niagara River, which comes from Lake Erie.
The name "Ontario" comes from an old Huron word that means "beautiful lake." Long ago, people lived around the lake and moved around a lot. They followed animals and used plants for food.
Today, Lake Ontario is important for many reasons. People enjoy fishing and boating on the lake. The area around the lake has many ports where ships load and unload goods. The lake also helps protect plants and animals, with many birds and fish living there.
Lake Ontario is a special place that many people love to visit and enjoy. It is a big part of both Canada and the United States.
