What is Lapis Lazuli?

Lapis lazuli is a very special blue stone that people have loved for thousands of years. Its bright blue color makes it stand out and look beautiful. The name comes from an old Persian word, and many languages use a similar word for the color blue because of this stone.

Where Do We Find It?

People have mined lapis lazuli since very old times in places like Sar-i Sang and Shortugai in Badakhshan, which is now part of Afghanistan. It has also been found in Mehrgarh, the Caucasus, and even as far away as Mauritania. Today, we still find lapis lazuli in northeast Afghanistan, west of Lake Baikal in Russia, and in the Andes mountains in Chile.

Why Is It Special?

Lapis lazuli is special because of its bright blue color, which comes from a mineral called lazurite. The stone also contains other minerals like calcite, which is white, and pyrite, which looks shiny and yellow. Artists in the past used lapis lazuli to make a blue paint called ultramarine, which they used in beautiful paintings.
