Traditional Laplap sosor dish from Malekula, Vanuatu

Laplap is the special food of Vanuatu. It is made from soft foods like breadfruit, bananas, taro, or yam. These foods are grated and mixed into a paste.

The paste is wrapped in green banana leaves and cooked in a special way. It is cooked in a very hot underground stone oven with coconut cream. This makes the food taste sweet and tasty.

Laplap is enjoyed during happy times and big meals. It shows the lovely traditions of the people in Vanuatu. The word laplap comes from the language called Bislama. Different places in Vanuatu have their own names for this tasty dish.
