Lemon
Adapted from Wikipedia · Explorer experience
Lemons are small, yellow fruits that grow on trees. They are special because they are a mix, or hybrid, of two other fruits: the citron and the bitter orange. True lemons likely started growing a long time ago in what is now northeastern India.
We use lemon juice all around the world. It tastes sour because it has something called citric acid. People love to use lemon juice in drinks like lemonade and foods like lemon meringue pie. The outside of the lemon, called the rind, is also used in cooking and baking.
Lemon trees grow best in warm places. In 2024, India and Mexico grew the most lemons. Lemon trees have yellow fruit that is oval and pointed. Inside the lemon, there are many small parts filled with juicy vesicles. Lemon juice is very sour and is used in many foods and drinks.
Lemons are also used in other fun ways. Lemon oil is used to help people relax. Lemon juice can even be used as invisible ink that shows up when heated! Lemons have been painted by famous artists and are part of many traditions in different cultures.
