Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

What is it?
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is a very famous painting made in 1907 by the artist Pablo Picasso. It shows five strong women in a special house on a street called Carrer d'Avinyó in Barcelona, Spain. The women look unusual with sharp shapes and mixed styles from many cultures.

Where is it now?
Today, this amazing painting lives in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, United States. It is one of the most important pieces there.

Why do people know about it?
When the painting was first shown in 1916, many people were surprised because it looked very different from what they were used to. Even though some did not like it at first, it helped change modern art forever. Picasso’s friend Georges Braque and he later created a new style called cubism.

Picasso was inspired by art from many places around the world, like masks and sculptures. He wanted to make something new and powerful. Even today, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is remembered as one of the most important artworks of the last 100 years!
