Leyte: A Beautiful Island in the Philippines
Leyte is a big, lovely island that is part of the Visayas group in the Philippines. It is one of the larger islands in the country and has many farms where people grow rice, corn, coconuts, and other crops. Many families here enjoy fishing in the sea.
Leyte is split into two parts called (Northern) Leyte and Southern Leyte. The most important towns are Tacloban on the east side and Ormoc on the west side. Near Ormoc, there are special places that use the Earth’s heat to make electricity, called geothermal power plants.
Long ago, different groups of people lived on Leyte, including the Warays in the east. One fun story tells of a leader named Datung Sumanga who came from Leyte and married a princess from Bohol. Today, Leyte is known for its beautiful nature, such as lakes, volcanoes, and quiet islands like Kalanggaman. The island also has the longest bridge in the Philippines, the San Juanico Bridge, which connects it to the nearby island of Samar.
