The Book of Calculation
The Liber Abaci is a very old book about numbers and math. It was written in the year 1202 by a man named Leonardo of Pisa, who we now call Fibonacci. This book taught people in Europe new and easier ways to work with numbers.
One big idea in the book was about how we count today. We use digits from 0 to 9, and this is called base‑10. The book showed how to use these numbers, which are now called Arabic numerals, instead of old letters like I, V, X, and L.
Because of this book, many people learned simpler ways to add, take away, multiply, and divide. It helped change how math was done and made calculations much easier. The book even talked about a special list of numbers that grow, which we now call the Fibonacci sequence.
The Liber Abaci was very important because it showed a new way to write numbers. This made math easier for everyone, from business people to math experts. Even though the book’s name means “The Book of the Abacus,” it did not really talk about the counting tool called an abacus. Instead, it taught ways to do math without using any tools.
