Lithosphere

A diagram showing different layers of Earth's crust and how thick they are under various regions of the planet.

The lithosphere is the solid outer layer of our planet Earth. It is like a hard shell that covers the Earth. This shell includes the crust — the thin outer skin — and the top part of the layer just below it, called the mantle.

The lithosphere is very important because it is where we live! It helps shape the Earth’s surface. Slowly, the lithosphere moves, which can make mountains grow. It is made of rocks and minerals that scientists love to study.

Scientists divide the lithosphere into pieces called tectonic plates. These plates move very slowly over millions of years. There are two main types: oceanic lithosphere under the oceans, and continental lithosphere under the land. Both help make our world what it is today.
