Welcome to Maastricht

Maastricht is a lovely city in the southeastern part of the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province called Limburg. The city sits on both sides of the Meuse River, also called the Maas in Dutch. Nearby, you can find Mount Saint Peter, which is mostly inside the city’s borders.

Maastricht is close to the border with Belgium and is part of a big area called the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. This area includes cities like Aachen, Liège, and Hasselt.

Maastricht has a long and interesting history. People have lived there for a very long time. The Romans built a bridge there a long time ago to help people travel. The city grew to become important for trade and religion. Today, Maastricht is known for its rich culture and beautiful old buildings. There are over 1,600 important old buildings in the city, which is the second-highest number in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam.

One of the most famous things about Maastricht is that it is where the euro currency was born. The city is also known for the Maastricht Treaty, which was very important for Europe.

Maastricht is easy to reach by train, car, or bus. The city has a main railway station with trains going to places like Amsterdam, Eindhoven, and even to Liège in Belgium. By car, you can use the A2 and A79 motorways. Cycling is very popular in Maastricht, and there are many bike paths.

The nearest airport is Maastricht Aachen Airport, but many people fly into bigger airports like Düsseldorf Airport in Germany or Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
