What is the Man and the Biosphere Programme?

The Man and the Biosphere Programme, or MAB, is a special science program started by UNESCO in 1968. It helps people learn how to live better with nature. This program brings together scientists, communities, and governments to study and protect important natural areas.

Biosphere Reserves

Biosphere reserves are special places chosen by countries to protect nature. They include land, water, and coastlines. These reserves help scientists learn how to take care of our world. There are three parts in each reserve: a protected core area, a buffer zone for safe activities, and a transition area where people can do most activities.

Why It Matters

The programme has helped create 759 special areas called Biosphere Reserves in 136 countries. These reserves cover more than 5% of Earth’s surface. They help protect nature and support local communities. The programme works with many countries to make the world a better place and support plans like the Sustainable Development Goals.
