Maseru

Maseru is the capital city of Lesotho. It is the largest city in the whole country. Maseru sits close to the border with South Africa. The city is named for the red sandstones found there.

Maseru was started by the British in 1869. It became the capital when Lesotho was a British protectorate. Even after Lesotho became independent in 1966, Maseru stayed the capital.

The city lies in a valley near the Mohokare River, also called the Caledon River. A bridge called Maseru Bridge connects Maseru to the nearby town of Ladybrand in South Africa. Maseru is surrounded by the beautiful Maloti Mountains.

Maseru has many important places. The Parliament building and the Royal Palace are there. The city also has a big sports stadium called Setsoto Stadium where football games are played. Maseru’s main road, Kingsway, was the first paved road in Lesotho.

Maseru has special friends called sister cities. These are Austin in the United States and Ceuta in Spain.
