The Beautiful Matterhorn

The Matterhorn is a very tall and famous mountain in the Alps. It stands between Switzerland and Italy. People love this mountain because of its special, pyramid-like shape that looks like a pointed hat. Many say it is one of the most beautiful mountains in the world.

The Matterhorn is very high, at 4,478 metres (14,692 feet). It is one of the tallest mountains in Europe. The mountain has four sides, each facing a different direction. Three sides are in Switzerland, and one side is in Italy. It looks over the towns of Zermatt in Switzerland and Breuil-Cervinia in Italy.

Names and History

The name Matterhorn comes from German words Matte (meadow) and Horn (horn), meaning “the peak of the meadows.” People have studied and painted the Matterhorn for many years. It became very famous after the first group of climbers reached the top in 1865, led by a man named Edward Whymper. Many climbers try to reach its top each year.
