Welcome to Mayotte
Mayotte is a beautiful group of islands that belongs to France. It is located in the Indian Ocean, close to Madagascar and Mozambique. Mayotte has two main islands called Grande-Terre and Petite-Terre, along with some smaller islands.
People in Mayotte speak French, and many also speak Shimaore or Kibushi. Most people practice Islam, a tradition that started from visitors from Arab countries long ago. Mayotte became part of France in 1841 and joined as a French department in 2011.
Nature and Geography
Mayotte is made up of islands with rich soil from old volcanic activity. The biggest island, Grande-Terre, is 39 kilometres long and 22 kilometres wide. The highest point is Mount Benara, which is 660 metres above sea level. Around the islands, there is a big coral reef that helps protect boats and homes many kinds of fish. This reef surrounds a large lagoon, one of the biggest and deepest in the world.
Living Together
Mayotte has many people who have come from nearby places, looking for better lives. Despite some challenges, the islands have French-style buildings and services. The main towns are Mamoudzou on Grande-Terre and Dzaoudzi on Petite-Terre.
