What is Motion?

Motion is when something changes its place over time. Imagine you are playing with a toy car. When you push it, it moves from one spot to another. That is motion! In physics, we learn that everything around us is always moving in some way.

Things That Move

Some motions are easy to see, like a car racing on a track. The car changes its position every second. Other motions are very small and hard to see, like tiny particles inside your body. Even the Earth is always moving! It spins so we have day and night, and it travels around the Sun in a path we call a year.

How We Describe Motion

We use many words to talk about motion. For example:

  • Position is where something is.
  • Distance is how far it has traveled.
  • Speed is how fast it is going.
  • Velocity tells us both the speed and the direction.
  • Acceleration is when something speeds up or slows down.

These ideas help scientists and engineers build amazing things like spaceships and fast cars. Motion is a big part of how our world works!
