Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is a big volcano in Italy. It sits right on the Gulf of Naples, just a short distance from the city of Naples. This volcano has a tall, cone shape and a deep crater on top.

People know about Vesuvius because of a very old and famous event. Long ago, in the year 79 AD, the volcano erupted and covered nearby places with ash. Two important old cities, Pompeii and Herculaneum, were buried. We learned about this from letters written by a person named Pliny the Younger.

Today, Vesuvius is part of a special area called a national park. Visitors can walk up to the top and see the crater. There are paths to follow, and sometimes people take a special train called a funicular to go up the steep slope. The area around Vesuvius is watched closely by scientists to keep everyone safe.
