What is a Navy?

A navy is a special part of a country's armed forces that works on water. Navies help keep the seas safe and can move soldiers to faraway places. They have many types of ships, like big ships that sail on top of the water, special ships that can land on beaches, submarines, and airplanes that fly from ships.

Navies help by stopping bad things like piracy. They can send help to places far from their home country to support friends. Some navies have special submarines that show they are ready to protect their country.

Naval work can happen in rivers, near coastlines, or far out in the open ocean. Each place has its own challenges, so navies train to be ready for all of them. They also help with communication and support other parts of the military.

The Word "Navy"

The word "navy" first appeared in English a long time ago, in the early 14th century. It came from Old French and means "fleet of ships." This came from the Latin word for "a ship." So, a navy is all about ships that help keep the seas safe.
