What Is Nervous Tissue?

Nervous tissue is a special kind of tissue that helps our bodies work. It is part of the nervous system, which controls many things we do. The nervous system has two main parts: the central nervous system, with the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, made of many nerves.

How Does It Work?

Nervous tissue is made of tiny cells called neurons. These cells can send and receive special messages, like tiny electrical signals, all through our body. These messages help us move, think, and feel. Neurons have long parts called axons that send these messages to other cells.

Helpful Friends

There are also other cells called neuroglia that help the neurons. Some of these cells protect the neurons, and others help the messages travel faster by wrapping the axons in a special covering. This helps our nervous system work quickly and well.
