What Is the New Year?

The New Year is the time when a new calendar year begins. It is like a fresh start for counting days. Most places today celebrate it on January 1, called New Year's Day. The night before, New Year's Eve, is full of fun and excitement.

Many cultures around the world have their own special ways to welcome the New Year. Some use the Chinese calendar, which follows the moon and seasons, while others follow the Islamic calendar, based on the moon. Each way has its own beautiful traditions and celebrations.

Fun Times Around the World

In Japan, people celebrate from January 1 to January 3 or 6. They call it Shōgatsu. In China, the New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, happens between January 21 and February 21. Families come together and share happy moments.

Some places celebrate in different months. For example, the Iranian calendar starts in March, and the Ethiopian calendar begins in September. Each celebration is unique and full of joy.

A Special Night

On New Year’s Eve, people often gather with family and friends. They might watch fireworks, eat special foods, and count down to midnight. It is a magical time for everyone to welcome the new year with hope and happiness.
