The Nisenan People

The Nisenan are a group of Native Americans who lived in Northern California. Their homes were near the Yuba River and American River. They have lived there for a very long time, even before new people came to the area.

The Nisenan are sometimes called part of the larger Maidu group, but many say they are their own special group. They had their own language, leaders, and traditions. Today, some Nisenan people belong to the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians.

The Nisenan lived in small villages. They built two kinds of homes: one for families and another for special ceremonies. Their food came from nature. They gathered acorns, collected berries, and hunted animals like deer and rabbits. Fishing was also important, with salmon being a favorite.

Today, the Nisenan work hard to keep their traditions alive. They hold special days where people can learn about their culture and language. They remember their past and hope to keep their heritage strong for the future.
