What Are Nutrients?

Nutrients are special things that help living things stay alive, grow big, and be healthy. Animals, plants, fungi, and tiny creatures called protists all need nutrients. These nutrients give energy and help build things like hair, feathers, or shells.

Every living thing needs water, and each kind of creature needs different nutrients. For example, animals need energy, special building blocks called amino acids, fats, vitamins, and minerals like iron. Plants get their nutrients from the soil, air, and water. Fungi get their nutrients from other living things or dead matter.

Two Main Types of Nutrients

Nutrients come in two main groups: macronutrients and micronutrients.

Macronutrients are needed in big amounts. These include carbohydrates for quick energy, proteins to build and fix body parts, fats to keep cells healthy, and water to stay alive.

Micronutrients are needed in tiny amounts. These are vitamins and some minerals. Even though we need only a little, they help our bodies work properly and stay healthy.

Why Nutrients Matter

Nutrients are very important because they help every living thing grow and stay strong. Without the right nutrients, it can be hard for plants, animals, or fungi to live well. Getting the right mix of nutrients keeps all creatures happy and healthy!
