What is Nylon?

Nylon is a special kind of material made by scientists. It is called a synthetic polymer, which means it is made from tiny parts linked together. Nylon can be soft and smooth, almost like silk. It can also be very strong and comes in many colors, often looking a bit brownish.

How is Nylon Used?

Because nylon is strong and can be shaped in many ways, it is used in many everyday things. You might find nylon in your clothes, like shirts or pants. It is also used in car parts, electrical equipment, and even plastic wrap for food. One of the first things made from nylon was a toothbrush in 1938.

A Little History

Nylon was invented by scientists at DuPont, a big company that makes chemicals. They started working on it in 1927 and finished in 1938. The idea was suggested by a scientist named Charles Stine. A clever scientist named Wallace Hume Carothers led the team. He learned from a German scientist named Hermann Staudinger.

Nylon became very famous when women's stockings made from nylon were shown at the 1939 New York World's Fair. People loved them! During a difficult time called World War II, nylon was used to make important things like parachutes and ropes. After the war, nylon came back and was used in many new ways, like carpets and clothes.

Nylon is a wonderful material that makes many things we use every day possible!
