Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Oak Ridge is a city in Anderson and Roane counties in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is about 25 miles west of Knoxville and part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Area. People often call it the "Atomic City" or the "Secret City" because of its special history.
Long ago, before Oak Ridge was built, people lived in the area for thousands of years. They built special mounds for ceremonies. Later, small farming communities grew here when European settlers arrived.
The city became well-known during a difficult time when countries did not get along. The U.S. government chose Oak Ridge for a secret science project. They built factories and houses very quickly, and many people moved there to help. The town grew fast from just a few thousand people to about 75,000 by 1945.
Today, Oak Ridge is a center for science and technology. It is home to important places like the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 National Security Complex. In 2016, a new element called tennessine was named after Tennessee to honor the great work done there. The city has many places to visit, such as the American Museum of Science and Energy and the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge. It is also a great spot for outdoor fun near lakes like Melton Hill Lake and Watts Bar Lake.
Oak Ridge has many interesting people who have done great things. Some became famous in science, sports, and entertainment. The city also has sister cities in other countries, such as Naka in Japan and Obninsk in Russia, showing how it connects with people all over the world.
