The Occitan Language

The Occitan language is a special way of talking used in parts of southern France, Monaco, Italy, and Spain. It is also called Provençal, and it has many different sounds and words in different places.

People have been writing in Occitan for a very long time, since the year 960! Old poems and stories were written in this language. During the Middle Ages, many poets called troubadours used Occitan in their beautiful poems. Important people like Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Richard I grew up speaking Occitan.

Occitan has many dialects, which are different ways of speaking the same language. Some of the main dialects are Limousin, Languedocien, and Gascon. These dialects share many words but also have some differences.

Occitan is not as commonly spoken today as it used to be. Most people who still speak it live in southern France, and many of them are older. In the past, it was hard to learn or use Occitan in schools, but now there are special schools called Calandretas where children can learn it.

One famous piece of writing in Occitan is from a story by the Italian writer Dante. In the story, a poet named Arnaut Daniel speaks these words:

Tan m'abellís vostre cortés deman, / qu'ieu no me puesc ni voill a vos cobrire. / Ieu sui Arnaut, que plor e vau cantan...

This means: "So pleases me your courteous demand, I cannot and I will not hide me from you. I am Arnaut, who weep and singing go..."

Occitan is a wonderful language with a rich history. Even though fewer people speak it today, many are working to keep it alive and teach it to new generations.
