The Paleozoic Era
The Paleozoic Era was a very old time in Earth's story. It started about 538.8 million years ago and ended 251.9 million years ago. People call it the "ancient life" era because many new kinds of animals and plants began to appear.
During this time, Earth changed a lot. First, many sea creatures like molluscs and fish appeared in the oceans. Later, some of these animals moved to land. By the end of the Paleozoic, big forests of early plants grew on many lands. These plants later became coal in places like Europe and North America.
The Paleozoic Era had six main times, called periods. The first was the Cambrian, when many new sea animals appeared. Next came the Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian. Each period brought new plants and animals to Earth.
Scientists learn about this old time by looking at rocks and tiny signs left by ancient animals. These signs help us understand how Earth and its life changed over millions of years. The Paleozoic Era is very important because it is when complex life first appeared in rocks.
