The Pelopion
The Pelopion was a very special place in Olympia, Greece. People believed it was the resting place of Pelops, a famous hero from Greek mythology. This spot was very important to many people who lived long ago.
At the Pelopion, people would bring gifts to honor Pelops. One of the gifts was a black ram, given each year as a sign of respect. This tradition continued even when Romans ruled the area. Priests would carefully cut steps into the mound so they could reach the top.
Unlike other altars made of stone, the Pelopion was built from packed earth and ashes. This made it different from places like Delphi or the Acropolis of Athens. The Pelopion reminds us how ancient people showed respect for their heroes and gods.
