Piz Bernina
Piz Bernina is a very tall mountain in the Eastern Alps. It is the highest mountain in this part of the world, standing at 4,048 meters (13,281 feet) tall. It is located near the town of St. Moritz, a famous place for winter sports, in the beautiful Engadin valley.
The mountain was named after the nearby Bernina Pass. The word “Piz” means “peak” in the local language called Romansh. Piz Bernina is special because it is the most easterly mountain in the Alps that rises above 4,000 meters.
Around Piz Bernina, there are large glaciers, with the biggest one being the Morteratsch Glacier. Even though the top of the mountain is in Switzerland, part of the mountain reaches into Italy. This makes a nearby point called La Spedla the highest spot in the Italian region of Lombardy.
People love to visit Piz Bernina because it is close to popular resorts like St. Moritz and Pontresina. You can see the mountain from several places using ski-lifts from Diavolezza, Piz Corvatsch, or Piz Nair. The Bernina railway also passes nearby, linking beautiful valleys together.
From the top of Piz Bernina, you can enjoy a wide, amazing view of the surrounding mountains. It is a place full of wonder and natural beauty.
