Polo

Polo is a fun game played on horseback. Players ride horses and use long sticks called mallets to hit a ball into the other team’s goal. The team with the most goals wins!

Polo is one of the oldest team sports in the world. It began thousands of years ago in Persia and central Asia. Later, it became popular in India. People all over the world enjoy polo today. It was even an Olympic sport many years ago.

Polo can be played outside on a big grass field or inside in a smaller arena. Outdoor games last about one and a half to two hours. They are split into short parts called chukkas. Players can switch horses during these parts.

The name polo comes from a word in the Balti language that means “ball.” It is related to a similar word in Standard Tibetan. Polo was useful for training horse soldiers and was played from Constantinople to Japan, Arabia, India, and Tibet during the Middle Ages.

Today, polo is played in many countries, such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Chile. The World Polo Championship happens every three years. Argentina is often called the home of polo because it has many great horses and players. Big polo tournaments there include the Hurlingham Polo Open, Tortugas Polo Open, and the Palermo Polo Open.

Polo is a special sport where everyday players can play with top professionals. It is enjoyed by people of all ages and continues to grow in popularity around the world.
