Who Was Polybius?

Polybius was an ancient Greek writer who lived a long time ago, from about 200 to 118 BC. He wrote a very important book called Histories. This book tells how Rome grew into a big and strong place in the Mediterranean area.

What Did Polybius Write About?

In his book, Polybius wrote about many big events. He talked about places like Italy, Greece, and Egypt. His book is special because it is one of the few books from that time that we still have today.

Why Do We Remember Polybius?

Polybius's ideas about how governments can work well were very smart. Later, important thinkers like Montesquieu and John Locke read his book. His ideas even helped shape the United States Constitution.

Polybius’s Friend

Polybius was also a friend and advisor to Scipio Aemilianus, a well-known Roman leader. He shared his ideas and advice with Scipio, which helped Scipio make important choices.
