Port Louis
Port Louis is the busy capital city of Mauritius. It is the largest city on the island and has many important jobs, like banks and government offices. The city is split between two areas: the Port Louis District and a small part of the Black River District.
People have lived in Port Louis for a very long time. The Dutch settlers first used it as a harbor in 1606. Later, the French made it the main city of Mauritius in 1736 and named it after King Louis XV. The French built many things there, and the city grew because it was a good place for ships to stop when traveling between Asia and Europe.
Port Louis is special because it has a mix of old and new. You can see old French buildings next to tall, modern ones. The city has many places to visit, like the Champ de Mars Racecourse, where people watch horse races, and the Caudan Waterfront, where you can find shops and restaurants.
The city is also home to important schools, like the University of Technology, Mauritius. People love to visit Port Louis for its lively markets, beautiful gardens, and the chance to learn about the island’s history.
Port Louis works with many cities around the world as friendly partners, or sister cities. Some of these friends are Alexandria in Egypt and Doha in Qatar.
