Welcome to Portland, Oregon

Portland is the biggest city in the lovely state of Oregon. It sits where the Willamette River meets the big Columbia River, in a pretty part of the Pacific Northwest.

Long ago, the land was home to the Chinookan peoples. Later, settlers from far away came in the 1840s and named the city after Portland, Maine. Today, Portland is famous for its beautiful roses, and people often call it the "City of Roses."

The city has a gentle climate with warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Portland is known for its many parks, like Forest Park, and for its lively music and arts scene. It is also home to fun sports teams like the Trail Blazers, Timbers, and Thorns. Portland works hard to be a friendly place to live, with good ways for people to get around and plans to take care of the environment.

Fun Things to See

Portland has many lovely parks and green spaces. One special park is Forest Park, the largest city park in the United States, covering more than 5,000 acres. Another fun spot is Mount Tabor Park, which has great views and old water tanks.

The city is also known for its many bridges over the Willamette River, some of which are over 100 years old. People love to visit places like the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and the Portland Art Museum.

Delicious Food and Drink

Portland is famous for its food carts and breweries. There are many places to try tasty food and drink from local breweries. The city holds fun beer festivals, like the Oregon Brewers Festival.

Playing Sports

Portland has several important sports teams. These include the Portland Trail Blazers, a basketball team, the Portland Timbers soccer team, the Portland Thorns FC women’s soccer team, and more. Fans love to cheer for their teams, and Portland is a great city for sports lovers.

Learning and Growing

Portland has many schools! There are nine public school districts and lots of private schools in the city. The biggest one is Portland Public Schools. Portland is also a great place for college, with schools like Portland State University and Oregon Health & Science University.

Getting Around

Portland has many ways for people to get around. One popular way is using the MAX Light Rail, which is a train that connects different parts of the city. There are also streetcars and buses that help people travel. The city has an airport called Portland International Airport for flights, and there are train and bus services too.

Portland is a wonderful city with lots to explore, delicious food, and friendly people!
