Welcome to Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island, or PEI, is a special little island that is part of Canada. It is the smallest province in Canada, but it is very crowded because many people live there in a small space. PEI is also called the "Garden of the Gulf" because it has beautiful gardens and green spaces.
A Place Full of History
Long ago, the island was home to the Mi'kmaq people, who called it Mi'kma'ki. Later, French settlers arrived and named it Île Saint-Jean. In 1798, the island was renamed after Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the father of Queen Victoria. In 1864, PEI hosted the Charlottetown Conference, which helped start Canada. PEI joined Canada in 1873 and is known as the "Birthplace of Confederation."
Farms and Nature
PEI is famous for its farms, especially for growing potatoes. The island’s soil is rich, and the weather is just right for growing many types of crops. Besides farming, PEI has beautiful coastlines and many places to explore. You can see red foxes, blue jays, and robins, and in recent years, North Atlantic right whales have been spotted near the island.
Fun Things to Do
PEI is a wonderful place to visit! One of the most famous stories from PEI is Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. You can visit Green Gables in Cavendish, a real farm that inspired the book. PEI also has many music festivals, like the Cavendish Beach Music Festival, and sports teams like the UPEI Panthers.
PEI has something for everyone, whether you love history, nature, farming, or stories!
