Welcome to Puerto Rico!
Puerto Rico is a beautiful group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. It is a special part of the United States, called a commonwealth. This means it is under U.S. control but is not one of the 50 states. The biggest island is surrounded by smaller islands like Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. Many people live there, with San Juan being the largest city.
Long ago, the islands were home to Indigenous peoples. Later, Spain ruled Puerto Rico for over 400 years. In 1898, after a difficult time between Spain and the United States, Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory. Today, people from Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens, but they cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections or elect representatives who can vote in Congress.
Puerto Rico has a wonderful mix of cultures from Indigenous peoples, Spain, and Africa. This creates a unique and colorful way of life. The islands are known for their beautiful beaches, rich history, and friendly people. Visitors often come to enjoy the sunny weather, lovely seas, and interesting places to explore.
The name "Puerto Rico" means "rich port" in Spanish. People from Puerto Rico sometimes call their home "Boricua," which comes from an old word meaning "Land of the Valiant Lord." The main city, San Juan, was once named "Ciudad de Puerto Rico," but over time the names switched.
Puerto Rico is a wonderful place with much to offer. Its history, culture, and natural beauty make it a special part of the world. Whether you are interested in history, nature, or just want to have fun on beautiful beaches, Puerto Rico is a place you will love to explore.
