Pyrenean Desman
The Pyrenean desman is a tiny animal that loves water. It lives in the mountains of France, Spain, Portugal, and Andorra. You can find it near clean, fast rivers and small lakes.
This little creature looks a bit like a mix of different animals. It has a long tail for swimming, strong claws for digging, and a funny trunk-like nose. People sometimes call it the “trumpet rat” because of its nose. The desman can’t see very well, so it uses special feelings on its nose to find food.
Pyrenean desmans eat tiny water bugs like larvae of stoneflies, caddisflies, and mayflies. They come out mostly at night to hunt for food. Because they need very clean water, they are a good sign that the water is healthy.
Scientists first learned about this animal in the early 1800s. It is shy and hard to study, but people are now learning more about it. The Pyrenean desman is a special symbol of the Pyrenees mountains, just like the brown bear. Some schools, tourists, and even comic books are helping to tell people about this amazing little creature.
