What is Ragtime?

Ragtime is a fun kind of music with a special bouncy beat. It started a long time ago in the late 1800s in African American communities. People loved this music because it felt happy and lively.

Famous Ragtime Music

One of the most famous ragtime musicians was Scott Joplin. He was called the "King of Ragtime." He wrote wonderful songs like "Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer." His music made many people happy and is still loved today.

Ragtime music was often played on the piano. People could buy special papers called sheet music or use piano rolls to play the music. This made it easy for everyone to enjoy.

Ragtime Around the World

Ragtime did not stay just in America. It traveled to Europe too! Famous composers like Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky listened to ragtime and used its ideas in their own music. This helped ragtime become known all over the world.

Even today, people still enjoy ragtime music. It has come back to life many times, especially when movies or new recordings make it popular again. Ragtime will always be remembered for its happy, dancing beats!
