René Descartes

Portrait of the philosopher René Descartes painted by Frans Hals.

René Descartes was a clever man from France. He lived a long time ago, from 1596 to 1650. People remember him because he asked big questions about how we know things.

Descartes loved math. He thought math was a great way to understand the world. He even made up a special way to mix math with shapes, called analytic geometry. Today, we still use ideas he created, like the Cartesian coordinate system, which helps us draw and measure on paper.

One of Descartes’ most famous ideas is “I think, therefore I am.” This means that because he could think, he knew he was real. He wrote many books about his ideas, and students still read them today.

Descartes was born in a place called La Haye en Touraine in France. After school, he joined the army and later traveled to places like the Netherlands. He wrote many important books there. Later in life, he moved to Sweden but sadly passed away there in 1650.
