The River Shannon
The River Shannon is the longest river in Ireland. It stretches for 360 kilometers, or 224 miles. The river starts at a tiny pool called the Shannon Pot in County Cavan. From there, it flows south and west until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean at the Shannon Estuary near the city of Limerick.
The River Shannon is very important for travel and nature. Many towns and villages are built along its banks. Some of these places are Kilrush, Shannon Town, Athlone, and Limerick. The river helps people move easily between these places.
The Shannon also has special areas that protect plants and animals. One of these is the Shannon Callows, a quiet spot where birds and flowers live safely.
Long ago, the river was used by people to travel and trade. Even today, many people enjoy boating on the Shannon for fun. The river is a beautiful part of Ireland's landscape and history.
