Rod Laver
Rod Laver was a wonderful tennis player from Australia. He was born on August 9, 1938, in Rockhampton. Many people think he is one of the greatest tennis players ever.
Laver loved playing tennis from a young age. He became really good and was the world’s number one player for five years from 1965 to 1969. He won many big matches and titles.
One amazing thing Laver did was win all four major tennis tournaments in one year, called the Grand Slam, twice—once in 1962 and again in 1969. This is very hard to do and only a few players have ever done it.
Laver was also known for playing well on all kinds of surfaces, like grass, clay, and hard courts. He helped his country, Australia, win an important team event called the Davis Cup five times.
Two big places are named after Laver: the Rod Laver Arena, where the Australian Open is played, and the Laver Cup, another famous tennis tournament.
