Romandy

Romandy is the part of Switzerland where most people speak French. It is in the western part of the country.

About 2 million people live in Romandy. This is about 23% of all the people in Switzerland. Most of these people live near Lake Geneva, especially in an area called the Arc Lémanique. This area connects the cities of Geneva and parts of Vaud and the Lower Valais.

The main language in Romandy is French. Four Swiss regions, or cantons, mainly speak French: Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, and Jura. In three other cantons, Fribourg/Freiburg, Valais/Wallis, and Berne/Bern, both French and German are official languages.

The word romand is an old way of saying "Roman" in French. People began using it to describe the French-speaking parts of Switzerland around the 1400s. Today, we often call this area Suisse romande.

Romandy is a special place where French culture shines. It has beautiful lakes, charming cities, and many libraries. People there enjoy cycling races like the Tour de Romandie and watch programs on Radio Télévision Suisse.
