What Are Ruins?

Ruins are the parts left over from old buildings that have broken down over time. They can be from very old places like ancient China, Greece, Egypt, and Rome. Some ruins come from faraway lands such as the Indus Valley, ancient Iraq, and the Incan and Mayan cities in the Americas.

Why Do Ruins Happen?

Ruins happen for many reasons. Natural events like earthquakes, storms, and floods can damage buildings. When towns or cities are left empty and not cared for, buildings slowly break down because of weather, plants, and people taking away pieces. Sometimes, old buildings are left behind when people move to new places.

Why Are Ruins Important?

People who study history and ancient cultures think ruins are very important. They help us learn about how people lived long ago. Many famous ruins are now protected as special places called UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This means they are valuable to everyone in the world.

Fun Facts

Ruins can be found all around the world. Some are very old, while others are from more recent times. They remind us of the past and show how things change over many years. Today, ruins inspire artists and appear in movies and books as symbols of change.
