The Ryukyu Islands

The Ryukyu Islands are a beautiful chain of islands in the ocean. They stretch from Kyushu to Taiwan. These islands are part of Japan and belong to two areas: Kagoshima Prefecture in the north and Okinawa Prefecture in the south. The biggest island is called Okinawa Island.

The weather here is warm and nice. In the north, it is a humid subtropical climate, and in the south, it is a tropical rainforest climate. The islands get a lot of rain and sometimes have big storms called typhoons. Many coral reefs can be found around the islands, especially in the south.

People living on the Ryukyu Islands have a rich culture. Long ago, the islands were ruled by the Ryukyu Kingdom. Today, most people speak Japanese, but some still speak old Ryukyuan languages. After World War II, the islands were under the control of the United States before returning to Japan in 1971.

The Ryukyu Islands are split into two main parts. The Northern Ryukyus are in Kagoshima Prefecture and are called the Satsunan Islands. The Southern Ryukyus are in Okinawa Prefecture and are also called the Ryukyu Islands. These islands have a warm sub-tropical climate and are warmer than Japan’s main islands. Summers can bring typhoons, and winters are mild with clear blue water.

The islands have many special plants and animals. Some places, like Yakushima, have very old trees and were named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The coral reefs are important but face dangers from farming and fishing. Unique animals live here, such as the Amami Rabbit and the Ryukyu flying fox. Some special snakes, called habu, also live on the islands.
