San Miguel Island
San Miguel Island is one of the beautiful Channel Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is the westernmost of these islands and lies across the Santa Barbara Channel from California. This island is part of Santa Barbara County and is owned by the United States Department of the Navy. Many parts of it are protected inside Channel Islands National Park.
The island is a special place for nature and history. Long ago, people called the Chumash lived there. They called the island Tuqan. Today, scientists visit to learn about sea animals and old bones from the past. The waters around the island are full of nutrients, helping many sea creatures live there.
Visitors can reach San Miguel Island by ferry from the Ventura Harbor through the Island Packers service. The island has a campground where people can stay, but they must follow special rules to keep safe. Hiking is usually done with a guide, and the island has beautiful tide pools to explore. The island is a quiet place to discover nature and learn about history.
