Scandium
Scandium is a shiny, silvery-white metal. It is a type of chemical element with the symbol Sc and atomic number 21. People usually call it a rare-earth element, just like yttrium and the lanthanides.
Scandium was discovered in 1879 by looking at two special rocks called euxenite and gadolinite from Scandinavia. It is found in places with other rare materials, like uranium.
Today, scandium is mostly used to make aluminium stronger. Adding a tiny bit of scandium to aluminium helps make strong, light metal. This is very useful for making airplane parts and sports equipment like baseball bats and bicycle frames.
Scandium can also help make very bright lights called metal-halide lamps. These lights look like sunlight and are great for TV cameras. Dentists even use special lasers with scandium to help treat teeth.
Scandium is a fascinating metal that helps make many things stronger and brighter!
