What Is a Scholarship?

A scholarship is a special kind of help that people give to students so they can pay for school. Unlike money that you have to pay back, like a loan, a scholarship does not need to be returned. This makes it very special for students who want to learn but might not have enough money.

Scholarships can help pay for many things, like books, school fees, or even a place to live. Sometimes they help with just a little bit, and other times they can cover almost everything! To keep a scholarship, students often need to do well in school or take part in activities, like playing on a sports team for an athletic scholarship.

A Long History

Scholarships have been around for a very long time. They began in medieval Europe as a way to help people get an education. Today, they are very important because they help everyone, even those from faraway or difficult places, to go to school. Some famous scholarships, like the Fulbright Scholarship and the Rhodes Scholarships, are known all around the world.

Different Kinds of Scholarships

Scholarships come in many types, and each one has its own rules:

  • Merit-based: For students who are very good at school, in arts, or sports.
  • Need-based: For students who need money to pay for school.
  • Athletic: For students who are great at sports and can play for a school team.

These scholarships make sure that many different students can get the chance to learn and grow.
